A Local Shares Her Top 5 Places to Check Out in Austin, Texas

By | Posted:

Now that the weather is finally starting to cool down in Austin, Texas, it’s a great time to visit and spend time outdoors.  Plus, Austin has a slew of festivals this time of year, including Austin City Limits and Formula One.  Being a resident of Austin, I’ve listed my favorite things to do.

You can fly to Austin using credit card rewards points from the Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card and the Chase Sapphire Reserve®.   Transfer those points to United Airlines or Southwest Airlines for the best value.

Top 5 Activities in Austin, Texas

1.   Kayak on Lady Bird Lake

Kayaking on the lake is my favorite activity in Austin!  The weather is usually perfect for kayaking, and I love how you can see nature and the city.  Check out Zilker Boats for pricing.

2.  Walk on Funky South First Street

Many people come to Austin and have plans of visiting Congress Avenue, but locals know that South First Street has more to offer.  South Austin is what made Austin weird, and you can find all that weirdness on South First Street.

3.   Check Out Franklin’s BBQ

I’ve only been to Franklin’s once (thanks to my first couchsurfer who waited in line for the both of us!).  The meat really was melt-in-your-mouth delicious, and I loved the sides and the desserts as well.  You can easily wait in line for up to 5 hours, but people make a party of it with camping chairs and music.  The food usually sells out by ~1:00 pm.

4.   Visit a Food Truck

If you’d rather not stand in line for BBQ, Austin is also known for its food trucks.  There are hundreds all over the city.  One of my favorites in the Picnic trailer food park, which has an assortment of food trucks for all different tastes.  Afterwards, you can take a stroll throughout nearby Zilker Park.

5.  Swim at Barton Springs

Barton Springs is open year round.  It’s a fun place to swim, but be warned, the water is extremely cold.  It’s a constant 68 degrees year round.  If you’re up for an adrenaline rush, jump into Barton Springs pool.
