Citi Points Sharing: How to Transfer Citi ThankYou Points to Someone Else’s Account

By | Posted:

Have you ever found a great deal on an award flight, but as soon you go to book it, you’ll realize that you are a few points short?  Sometimes you can purchase miles directly to top off your balance, but that becomes very expensive and negates the fun part, which is Big Travel with Small Money!

That’s why Citi ThankYou points are so valuable.  Citi lets you easily transfer your ThankYou points to anyone with a ThankYou account with Citi Points Sharing.  So you could transfer points between yourself and a spouse, partner, child, or friend – and it’s free.

Then, once you’ve moved the points, you can transfer them to Citi’s airline partners and book the award flight you want.

Now’s an excellent time to boost your Citi ThankYou account balance, because the Citi ThankYou Premier is currently offering its highest welcome bonus ever!

You can apply for the Citi ThankYou Premier here.

I’ll walk you through how to transfer points from your ThankYou account to anyone you want with Citi Points Sharing.

When You Should Use Citi Points Sharing

Citi ThankYou Points Sharing can really come in handy when trying to book flight deals that are sure to disappear quickly.  For example, I found this great flight deal from New York (JFK) to Honolulu in February for 35,000 Flying Blue miles round-trip.

However, I only have a little over 15,000 Flying Blue miles in my account.  Normally, I’d have to earn those extra ~20,000 miles before I’d be able to book the flight, and with my luck my flight would get booked by others before I earn those points.

With Citi Points Sharing, if my wife has 20,000 ThankYou points in her ThankYou account, she could transfer those points over to me instantly.  Once in my account, I can transfer the points to my Flying Blue account and book my flight to Hawaii!  How I’d get away with booking a flight to Hawaii without my wife is another matter entirely… 😉

How to Use Citi Point Sharing

Transferring points from your Citi ThankYou account to a friend or family member is really easy!  I’ll show you how to it in a few quick steps.

First, you’ll need a Citi ThankYou card like the Citi ThankYou Premier or Citi Prestige (no longer available to new applicants).  These cards allow you to redeem your points for paid travel through the Citi ThankYou Travel Portal.  Or you can potentially get even more value by transferring points to Citi’s airline partners like JetBlue or Singapore Airlines.

Step 1.   Sign Into the Citi ThankYou Rewards Site

In order to share your points, log into your Citi ThankYou Rewards account and find the “More Ways to Redeemmenu.

Click on “More Ways to Redeem” to Get Started

Step 2.   Find the Points Sharing Option

Click the “Points Sharing” tab.

Select “Points Sharing” to Move Your Points to Someone Else’s Citi ThankYou Account

Step 3.   Confirm Identity

Citi adds an extra layer of security to points transfers.  You’ll have the option to have a security code sent via text or phone call.

Citi Will Verify Your Identity by Sending You a Verification Code via Call or Text

Once you receive your code, enter it when prompted.

Step 4.   Start the Points Sharing Process

Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click “Begin Sharing.

Find the “Begin Sharing” Button at the Bottom of the Page

Step 5.   Enter Recipient Details

Fill in the form with the number of Citi ThankYou points you’d like to share, first and last name of the recipient, and their Citi ThankYou account type and number.

You Can Send (and Receive) up to 100,000 Citi ThankYou Points per Calendar Year

You’ll also need to agree to the terms and conditions before you click “Continue.

Step 6.   Review and Confirm

After you’ve entered your information, you’ll have one last chance to review the details before you confirm the transfer.

Once you confirm, the points will instantly be deducted from your account and will appear in your friend’s ThankYou account.

Are There Restrictions With Points Sharing?

While Chase and AMEX have strict rules around transferring points, the Citi ThankYou program lets you share your points with anyone with a ThankYou account for free.

However, there are a few things to keep in mind when transferring ThankYou points:

  • You can only share up to 100,000 ThankYou points in a calendar year
  • You can only receive up to 100,000 ThankYou points in a calendar year
  • Once points are shared, they expire in 90 days.  So you’ll want to hold off on sharing your points until you are ready to use them!
