Emily’s France Trip Report – Part 5: Our Favorite Restaurants & Cafes

By | Posted:

Emily:  My partner Alfy and I wanted to take a summer vacation, so we planned a visit to France.  We paid ~$410 each for our family of 4 to fly round-trip to France in Business Class.  And had a luxurious stay in a ~$1,600 per night suite for ~$160 TOTAL.

This series of posts will highlight our trip, and give you step-by-step instructions so that you too can go to Europe using miles and points!  Plus, I’ll share my tips for the cheapest car rentals and the BEST credit cards to use when traveling internationally.

My cousin, Jered, and his wife had never traveled to France before (and neither had Alfy!), so we invited them to join us!  The trip turned into a long double date to France on miles & points!  We decided on our own “tour de France” and visited 5 cities in ~2.5 weeks.

France is known for their food, and we had some exceptional meals on this trip.  In this post, I’ll highlight some of my favorite ones from each city.

Pro Tip: Use your Chase Sapphire Preferred or Chase Sapphire Reserve to pay for meals & travel when traveling internationally.  With the Sapphire Preferred, you’ll earn 2X Chase Ultimate Rewards points per $1 you spend on dining.  And the Sapphire Reserve earns 3X Chase Ultimate Rewards points per $1 on dining.  Plus, neither card charges foreign transaction fees!

Paris

DuPain

DuPain is a great little café with delicious sweets and a great café.

Monsieur Mattieu

One evening, Jered picked out a wine-bar for us to check out.  The wine here was amazing.

One thing I love about Europe is the commitment to going out with friends and family and lingering over a meal (or in this case, drinks) for hours.  No one rushes you, and almost every day, we would relax together over good food and good wine.  I was pregnant so couldn’t drink a lot, but I did sample a few wines during my trip.

Nice

Le Luna Rossa

For our restaurant picks, we usually try to mix Rick Steve’s recommendations with those we find on Yelp or Tripadvisor.  Rick Steves mainly seems on point, but I’ve been to a few spots that weren’t the best.

Le Luna Rossa specializes in Italian, and we found the food here excellent.  Plus, the waiter was very nice and took really good care of us.

Provence

Sometimes it’s nice to stay in and cook your own food at the Airbnb.  That’s what we did in Provence.  We went to the local supermarket and bought some meats and veggies to cook out on the grill.

This meal took the most time, but was the most memorable from our trip.

Antibes

Le Brulot

One of our favorite meals in Antibes was at Le Brulot.  We had some amazing food, and again the service was excellent.  Everyone seemed to enjoy their jobs.

Bottom Line

It cost ~$1,640 for the 4 of us to fly round-trip in Business Class from New York to Europe.  I used a combination of miles & points from different programs to book flights for me and my family.  Including AMEX Membership Rewards and Chase Ultimate Rewards points.

One of the highlights of our trip was enjoying the country’s amazing food and restaurants.  I love that lingering over hours-long meals is commonplace.  To me, there’s no better place to enjoy good food, good wine, and good conversation.

I love using my Chase Sapphire Preferred card to avoid pesky foreign transaction fees and to maximize my points earned when traveling and visiting restaurants.
