It’ll Soon Be Harder to Qualify for the Bonus on Marriott and Starwood Cards

Chase Marriott Rewards® Premier Plus Credit Card

Right now, Chase allows you to receive the sign-up bonus on the Marriott Rewards Premier Plus card as long as you don’t currently have the card, and haven’t received a welcome bonus on the card in the past 24 months.

But starting August 26, 2018, you’ll also be restricted from earning the bonus on this card if:

  • You’re a current Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express cardholder, or have had the card within the last 30 days
  • You’ve earned an intro bonus or upgrade bonus on the Starwood Preferred Guest® American Express Luxury Card (not yet available) or Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card from American Express within the past 24 months
  • You were approved for either the AMEX Starwood Consumer Luxury or AMEX Starwood Business card within the past 90 days

So, if you’ll be restricted by these new rules and want to apply for the Chase Marriott Rewards Premier Plus card be sure you do it BEFORE August 26, 2018.  To help decide whether this card makes sense for you, check out our full review here.

Chase Marriott Rewards Premier Business Credit Card

Similar to the personal version of the Chase Marriott card, you can’t earn the welcome bonus on the Chase Marriott Premier small business card if you currently have the card or have received the welcome bonus in the past 24 months.

In addition to these rules, starting August 26, 2018, you will NOT be eligible for the sign-up bonus on the Chase Marriott business card if:

Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express

AMEX and Starwood will most likely continue to restrict the welcome bonus for the AMEX Starwood personal card for anyone who has or has had the card in the past.

But in addition, you will NOT be eligible for the welcome bonus if:

  • You have or had a Chase Marriott personal or Ritz-Carlton card in the past 30 days

Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card from American Express

As with the AMEX Starwood personal card, AMEX and Starwood will most likely continue to restrict the welcome bonus for the AMEX Starwood business card for anyone who has or has had the card in the past.

Starting August 26, 2018, you’ll also be restricted from earning the intro bonus if:

  • You have or had a Chase Marriott Business card in the past 30 days
  • You received an intro bonus or upgrade bonus for a Chase Marriott Rewards Premier Plus card or a Chase Marriott Rewards Premier card in the past 24 months
  • You were approved for a Chase Marriott Rewards Premier Plus card or a Chase Marriott Rewards Premier card in the past 90 days

Starwood Preferred Guest® American Express Luxury Card

You’ll be ineligible for the intro bonus on the AMEX Starwood Luxury card if:

Book Your Marriott Travel Packages Before It’s Too Late!

There are a lot of conflicting reports about the last date to book Marriott Travel Packages.  But one thing that seems clear is you can book Marriott Travel Packages at the current rate until August 17, 2018.

One Mile at a Time is reporting that Marriott recommends “members with a certificate attach it to a hotel stay before August 18.”  We don’t yet know what Marriott will do with folks’ existing 7-night hotel certificates after that date.  And to be clear, Marriott is only “recommending” you use your hotel certificate before August 18, 2018.  But we have no idea whether it will be a better deal to use them now or wait until after the merger.

So, if you’re looking to redeem Marriott points for one of these packages, you’ll want to do so before the merger deadline!  Because afterwards the price for Marriott Travel Packages will skyrocket!
