3. Interesting News Regarding Aeroplan’s New Frequent Flyer Program That’s Set to Launch in 2020
It was over a year ago that we let you know about Air Canada’s plan to launch a new frequent flyer program. It gets a bit confusing because currently Air Canada’s frequent flyer program is Aeroplan. But Aeroplan is run by a separate company, which isn’t that common in the industry.
On June 30, 2020, Air Canada’s contract with Aeroplan expires. At that point Air Canada plans on having their own frequent flyer program. So Aeroplan is getting creative in order to survive.
Starting in July 2020, they plan on introducing the ability to transfer Aeroplan miles to nearly 20 airline and hotel partners. And Aeroplan has said they want continue to offer the following award prices:
- 15,000 Aeroplan miles for short-haul round-trip North American flights
- 25,000 Aeroplan miles for long-haul round-trip North American flights
- 40,000 Aeroplan miles for round-trip flights to Mexico and the Caribbean
- 60,000 Aeroplan miles for round-trip flights to Europe
- 75,000 Aeroplan miles for round-trip flights to Asia
The problem here is that nothing is set in stone. Aeroplan hasn’t officially announced transfer partners. They haven’t told us what those transfer rates are going to be, which is a big part of the equation when it comes to flexible points. And even if they do end up with the listed award prices, there are no promises as to how many seats will be available at those prices.
One interesting addition is that they plan to charter flights on select routes that folks can redeem miles for. Though we don’t know where these new charter flights will fly or how many miles tickets will cost.
What do you think of this news? Does it pique your interest in Air Canada’s Aeroplan?
