The Southwest Priority Credit Card Sign-Up Bonus Can Be Worth $1,000 (and Much More!) in Travel

Apply Here:   Chase Southwest Priority Card

With the Chase Southwest Priority Card, you can earn up to 65,000 Southwest points after meeting tiered minimum spending requirements:

  • 40,000 Southwest points after spending $1,000 on purchases within the first 3 months of account opening
  • 25,000 more Southwest points after spending a total of $15,000 on purchases within the first year

This limited-time offer will end on August 22, 2018.  While $15,000 in purchases is no small amount of money, at least you have 1 year to complete the minimum spending to unlock the full bonus!

Southwest points are, on average, worth ~1.5 cents each.  Though I’ve been consistently successful in receiving value of ~1.8 cents per point.  So it shouldn’t be difficult for you to receive a value of $1,000+ from this 65,000 Southwest point sign-up bonus!

After Meeting Tiered Spending Requirements, You’ll Have More Than Enough Southwest Points for 4 Round-Trip Flights Between Many US Cities and Cancun!  Though You’ll Have to Pay Taxes & Fees

But the best part is that this sign-up bonus counts toward earning the Southwest Companion Pass, our #1 favorite deal in travel!  Folks with the Companion Pass can bring a friend or family member along on paid and award tickets for just the cost of taxes and fees!  So if you have the Southwest Companion pass, you can get almost double the value from this card’s bonus!

How to Earn Points With the Southwest Priority Credit Card

After you earn the card’s sign-up bonus, you’ll continue to earn Southwest points at the following rates:

  • 2 Southwest points per $1 spent on Southwest Airlines and Rapid Rewards hotel and car rental partners
  • 1 Southwest point per $1 spent on all other purchases
  • Faster Southwest Elite Status – Earn 1,500 Tier Qualifying Points for each $10,000 you spend, capped at 15,000 points

Your points don’t expire as long as you have a Southwest credit card.

That’s not a fabulous return on your spending.  Especially because there are other non-Southwest credit cards that earn more Southwest points than this one!  For example, the Chase Sapphire Reserve earns 3 Chase Ultimate Rewards points per $1 on travel, which you can transfer to Southwest at a 1:1 ratio.

How to Use the Points You Earn from the Southwest Priority Credit Card

The cost of an award seat on Southwest is directly tied to the cash price of the ticket.  So when Southwest has a sale, you’ll pay fewer points!

And Southwest is almost ALWAYS having some kind of sale.  My home airport is Cincinnati, and I frequently see flights to nearby cities like Chicago or Washington, DC, for $49 (or ~2,800 Southwest points) one-way, plus ~$6 in taxes.

We recently used Southwest points to fly to Chicago for a weekend.

The Centennial Wheel at Navy Pier Is Exactly as Scary as I Thought It Would Be

With this 65,000 Southwest point sign-up bonus, I could book 11 of these round-trip Southwest flight sales to Chicago (65,000 points / ~2,800 points per flight).  That’s well worth the effort it takes to open a credit card!

Southwest flies to plenty of other fun cities around the US, and even several tropical destinations below the border.  So you’ll have NO trouble making memories with Southwest points.

For example, you can fly from Austin to Costa Rica for ~11,000 Southwest points and ~$22 in taxes & fees.

Southwest is also planning to begin flights to Hawaii in late 2018 or early 2019.  So now’s the perfect time to earn points for those upcoming award flights!

Benefits of the Southwest Priority Credit Card

$75 Annual Travel Credit

Each year, you’ll receive a $75 credit valid for travel on Southwest.

Upgraded Boarding

As a cardholder, your boarding will be upgraded up to 4 times per year (when available)

Southwest Doesn’t Have Assigned Seats.  So Upgraded Boarding Gives You a Better Chance of Sitting With Your Family and Friends

20% Back for In-Flight Purchases

You’ll get a 20% discount on things like drinks, Wi-Fi, messages, and movies during your flight.

Is the Southwest Priority Credit Card Worth the Annual Fee?

If you fly Southwest often, this card makes every bit of sense.  And if you have the Southwest Companion Pass, it’s a no-brainer.

The card has a $149 annual fee, NOT waived the first year, which is significantly higher than the annual fees of other Southwest credit cards.  However, the card comes with an annual $75 Southwest credit.  That effectively drops the annual fee to $74 per year (as long as you would have spent $75 on Southwest anyway).

The card also comes with 7,500 bonus Southwest points every cardmember anniversary.  And because you can generally get 1.5 cents per point from Southwest points, that’s like receiving another ~$112 in value from the card (7,500 bonus points X 1.5 cents per point).

Between these 2 benefits alone, you’re getting ~$187 in value every year from the card.  That’s $38 more than you’re paying for the annual fee!

Who Is Eligible for the Chase Southwest Priority Credit Card?

The Chase Southwest Priority Card will likely fall under Chase’s strict approval rules.  So if you’ve opened 5+ credit cards from ANY bank in the past 24 months (excluding certain small business cards and Chase business cards), you’re not likely to be approved.

Additionally, Chase has a rule that you can NOT have more than 1 personal Southwest credit card at once.  So if you currently have any other personal Chase Southwest credit cards, this card is likely a no-go, unless you cancel them first.

Bottom Line

If you’re a frequent Southwest flyer, or even if you think you’ll fly Southwest a couple of times per year, the Chase Southwest Priority card will save you money.  And even if you’re skeptical, the card has the highest-ever sign-up bonus for a Southwest credit card.  So it’s worth earning the bonus and giving it a whirl for a year to see if you like it.

Through August 22, 2018, you’ll earn up to 65,000 Southwest points after meeting tiered minimum spending requirements:

  • 40,000 Southwest points after spending $1,000 on purchases within the first 3 months of account opening
